DASHES AND NOTES FROM THE
COMMODORE
February 6, 2007
We had a super turnout at
our Super Bowl Party. The winners of the betting pool were: Evelyn Sanders,
who won the first and second quarter, and the Chontows , who won the third
quarter and finally but not least, the Epsteins won the fourth quarter. Thank
you again Jan and Phil for running a great event!
As most of you know, Al
Kamine recently underwent surgery.
AL KAMINE IS NOW AT KESSLER IN

recovering. He would love visitors so if you have the time go see our Al.
The following are two
emails we received from the high seas:
Hi Everybody,
We are now going around Cape Hope the southern tip of South America, and have
just had the most exciting 36 hrs which will forever be known as a day of
infamy. It started with the captain warning us about some rough weather at sea
in the morning and then the waves got BIGGER and BIGGER..we were sitting down
to lunch when we were hit by two consecutive waves of between 55 -65 ft high
and winds of hurricane force. The waves looked like mountains coming at us
higher than the windows. The ship listed over about 25 degrees and everything
went flying across the dining room and every other part of the ship:. people,
tables, chairs, plates, glasses and silverware. People all around were cut and
bruised ,bumped and lying on the floor. We headed for the infirmary and found
everything on the floor, computers, printers, medications and records. Well
we all survived and the captain decided to turn around and return to Usuaia,
Argentina because we had people who needed medical attention. We made it
thru rocking and rolling of the ship all nite ? sleeping a bit. We were never
in danger, BUT???.it sure was a little scary.
The crew and the whole ship’s company were really great. Today when the
captain held a passenger briefing,he got a standing ovation for getting us
thru the storm. It was truly a “very exciting” 36 hours. Now, we will leave
here for Antarctica with excitement and hope to be there by Sunday.
The great adventure goes on??

We hereby lay claim to having the most southern get-together in the
world of GSYC. Our ship, the Prinsendam, had to return to Usuaia, Argentina,
after suffering damage and having passenger in need of medical attention from
the severe storm we were in between Cape Horn and Antarctica. We saw the
Crystal Symphony docked near us and knew Helene Salzman was on board. We
decided to contact her and were told she was ashore on a tour, but would
return shortly. You can't imagine the surprised look on her face when Mike
opened the door of her van and said, "Can I help you ma'm?" We hollered,
hugged and kissed on the pier. We were Helene's guests on her ship for lunch
and after several hours, we bid farewell on the pier and promised to wave to
each other in Antarctica.
Love to all,
the Unger's and Helene
